BiNet USA Media Report
March 1998
By Michael Szymanski
National Media Coordinator
BI MTV VIDEO. Rob Halford, formerly of Judas Priest, has a very bisexual video coming out on MTV directed by porn directrix Chi Chi LaRue, and starring many bi pornstars, including Sharon Kane, Tom Chase, Jeanna Fine, Rod Barry, Bradley Picklesheimer, etc. Right now, it's so hot, MTV is seeing if they should cut the girl-girl scenes or the guys licking on each others' boots, or perhaps the girl spitting in each other's mouths? Sounds hot...there's more, you just wait. Halford just came out of the closet, by the way! They may censor it, which could warrant a letter of protest. I'll keep you informed.
BI MAINSTREAM! Our Bi drag performer friend (who raised $$ for his/her fab performance at the LA Bi Con last summer) Geoffrey Karen Dior was on VERONICA'S CLOSET the last week of February playing the double to Kirstie Alley! This is the guy/girl who was also on XENA.
JASON PRIESTLEY is in a bi-themed film LOVE AND DEATH ON LONG ISLAND where a mainstream writer (married to a woman) played by John Hurt, falls in love with Jason's screen persona. The new IN MAGAZINE will have a story and interview of Jason (by me), revealing how he handles the gay rumors about himself and how he handles guys who come on to him, in his most revealing interview to date.
20/20 REPORT. Sometime in late April, 20/20 will air an episode on Bisexuality, and I'm in it talking about the definition of Bisexuality and some of the discrimination facing us from both hetero and homo communities. There's a panel discussion to be filmed in NY later this month, and Elaine Holliman is filming part of THEIR filming and working out a deal to get some of her Bi Documentary on the air, too.
ANNE HECHE REPORT...
In LIFE Magazine, March 1998
LIFE: Do you define yourself as a lesbian or bisexual?
ANNE: Neither. I didn't know I was open to women, not that I could have
ever denied it. The definition of gay is that you're attracted to the same
sex; there are people who are born attracted to the same sex.
LIFE: Do you think that you were born that way?
ANNE: No, I think I was born attracted to a human soul. I've always lived
my life that way. Everyone wanted me to be some Hollywood thing that went out
with another Hollywood thing. I just wasn't that person. I wouldn't say I
would go for another woman again - I wouldn't cheapen it by saying that. I'm
never going to be with anybody else. It's the thing I know most in my life.
LIFE: How do you know?
ANNE: I knew the second I met Ellen I would be with her forever. She
didn't believe it. Took her three days. We haven't been apart since the day
we met.
LIFE: What's in your future?
ANNE: As long as I know my future is with Ellen, I don't have to think
about it.
BI WOMEN, an EAR-Y REPORT??
In WASHINGTON POST, March 3, 1998 Scientists yesterday reported the first strong physiological evidence that lesbian and bisexual women may be biologically different from heterosexual women.
The researchers at the University of Texas in Austin found that, compared with heterosexual women, the hearing of homosexual and bisexual women tends to be a bit more like that of men.
The findings suggest that homosexual and bisexual women develop in subtly different ways than heterosexual women. Therefore, their brains may also form differently, accounting for their sexuality, the researchers said.
"It's an indication that other brain sites have also been masculinized," said Dennis McFadden, a professor of experimental psychology who led the study in today's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
BI BOYS, the SCARY REPORT.
Also in WASHINGTON POST, Gay and bisexual teenage boys are seven times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual counterparts, according to researchers at the University of Minnesota who analyzed data from a study of more than 36,000 middle and high school students.
Gary Remafedi of the University of Minnesota's department of pediatrics and his colleagues analyzed answers to questions about sexual orientation and sexual activity contained in the 1987 Adolescent Health Survey, a statewide questionnaire administered to all public school students in grades 7 through 12.
Remafedi and his colleagues randomly selected 394 youths -- 212 boys and 182 girls -- who described themselves as homosexual or bisexual. They were matched with 336 heterosexual students. The frequency of suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts was then compared.
Researchers found that 28.1 percent of boys who identified themselves as gay or bisexual reported making at least one suicide attempt, compared to 20.5 percent of girls who identified themselves as lesbians, 14.5 percent of heterosexual females and 4.2 percent of heterosexual males.
The report found that adolescent "male bisexuality/homosexuality was associated with a greater than sevenfold increased odds of a suicide attempt," compared with adolescent male heterosexuality. The researchers also found more than triple the incidence of suicidal intentions among male gay or bisexual teens, compared with their straight peers.
However, "bisexuality/homosexuality was not significantly associated with suicide risk in young women," the researchers report.
BI ANY OTHER NAME ON VIDEO! Good news on the local front. New BiNET LA pal Kyle Schickner (director and actor) will have his movie ROSE BI ANY OTHER NAME, available on video at the International Conference. It's a woman's story that is far better than CHASING AMY and very sweet.
KANSANS KICK OUT BI CONTENT? Anything with gay or bi content may be axed out of the curriculum at the University of Kansas, including two ethics classes, Journalism 605 and a University of Kansas Medical Center course. "A course does not have to be a sexuality course to contain references to sexual orientation," said Dennis Dailey, professor of social welfare. Every class in the social welfare department could be submitted for the legislative request, he said.
"There's not a course that at some point in the semester doesn't mention the issue," he said.
In an age when gender issues are so prevalent, he said, universities shouldn't have to answer to political will when preparing what they want to teach - especially when so much about homosexuals and bisexuals is worth teaching.
He said an Honors Composition II class he recently taught included analysis of "The Iliad," an epic that in part described the ancient Greek ideal of male-male love among soldiers at war, believed to enhance morale in the ranks.
BIs ALMOST Protected in DES MOINES
DES MOINES REGISTER, February 13, After almost five years of discussion, the Des Moines Human Rights Commission voted to expand the city's anti- discrimination law to cover sexual orientation. The change would put Des Moines in the ranks of Ames and Iowa City, which protect homosexuals from discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations.
The city already prohibits such discrimination based on race, gender, religion or any of five other characteristics. The new protection would cover heterosexuals, bisexuals, and homosexuals, but not people involved in illegal acts, such as pedophilia.

TWO BI SPECIFIC STORIES excerpted...
Rikki Roby, 13, Freshman
"Don't Come Back Gay"
Rikki Roby left Casper, Wyoming, last summer to live with her lesbian mom in Dallas. And as her dad bid her farewell, he had this warning for his rebellious 13-year-old daughter: "Rikki, don't you dare come back gay." Well, Dad, guess what?
After meeting a girl in November who "took my breath away," Rikki now says that if you need to classify her, she guesses she'd be considered bisexual. "I am who I am," she says with grown-up poise, "and if gay is who I am, so be it."
The outspoken young teen with gorgeous, shampoo-commercial hair came to the Walt Whitman school as "the straight girl," looking for a place where people wouldn't give her or her sister any grief about their mom. She's well aware that social conservatives might say she's been "converted." But that's ridiculous, she says. "I didn't do it to please anybody." Her teachers are also concerned about the "recruitment" issue because it's a charge often hurled at gay adults. But, they say, Rikki's expressions of bisexuality should be seen as positive, because it means she isn't stifled. She feels free to explore, even if she changes her mind another 10 times before she graduates.
Also,Trudy Ware, 36, Parent
If Trudy Ware had gone to high school at a place like Walt Whitman, she might not have been forced to hang up her pompons in disgrace.
But her only option as a teenager was the local high school in small-town Oklahoma, and when she got caught kissing another girl, she went from head cheerleader and star of the girls' basketball team to "lesbian leper" overnight.
Now 36 and raising her teenage bisexual son, she's relieved Chris doesn't have to face the same humiliation and harassment. Unlike his mom's high school nightmare, Chris can wear his rainbow earring and talk about cute boys without thinking twice.
For most of his life, Chris lived with his dad and step-mom in Branson, Missouri. Though he wasn't openly bisexual there, he was openly rebellious, and eager to spend time with his mom. So he moved to Dallas.
Hoping to get Chris into a better school district, Trudy moved out of Dallas's gay neighborhood when she won custody.
But Chris didn't stay long at the better school. Kids poked fun at his clothes, his hair, the way he walked. He wasn't making friends.
For the record, Chris says he hated the school because some students carried guns and stole stuff out of his locker. Sure, Walt Whitman is homophobia-free, but it's also nice that "you don't have to worry about anyone packing," he says.
He and his mom found out about the Walt Whitman school, and Chris tried it out for a day. When Trudy picked him up, the look on his face told her he had found a home. There was just one major roadblock: money.
SOUNDS LIKE TWO CANDIDATES FOR OUR BI YOUTH TEAM!
BI MONSTERS!
DETROIT NEWS, January 30, 1998 In the 1930s, when scientific debates raged over what makes someone homosexual, classic horror movies like Frankenstein (1931) and Werewolf of London (1935) dwelt on monsters' origins. The tales were told in ways intended to bring homosexuality to mind. Sometimes the monster is gay or bisexual--Dracula (1931) and Dracula's Daughter (1936). Other times a seemingly regular guy has an unacceptable side he trys to keep hidden--Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1932).
BOYSRCH RULES!
The policy on gays in the military is not just "don't ask, don't tell" but also "don't pursue" the Navy was reminded by a federal court order reinstating a sailor investigators had "outed" as gay as a result of his personal profile with an online service.
But because discharges of gays are on the rise despite the policy, the case illustrates the risks gay and bisexual service members take by revealing information about themselves online.
Senior Chief Petty Officer Timothy McVeigh used the screen name "Boysrch" and described himself as gay in his America Online, or AOL, profile. The profiles allow AOL members to share information about themselves.
The "Boysrch" screen name appeared on an electronic-mail message signed "Tim" and was turned over to the Navy. Investigator asked an AOL employee for "Tim's" identity and was told it was McVeigh.
A federal judge said Jan. 29 that the Navy and AOL violated the law.
Because McVeigh's profile page was anonymous, the judge ruled, the Navy had no right to try to prove he had declared himself homosexual.
The ruling was a victory for McVeigh and others expecting privacy behind an online identity. Nevertheless, it also is making military members think twice about what they put on their electronic profiles.
In one case, Air Force Times found a profile of an individual claiming to be a first lieutenant in the Air Force. First and last names were included in the profile, along with a message that the officer was looking for a bisexual encounter.
In another example, a major in the Air Force Reserve used a first initial and last name on a profile saying he "would love to get with two very bi females."
If the name was not specific enough, he also noted his date of birth and the city where he lives.
"I hadn't really thought about it when I put [the profile] out there," he said in a telephone interview.
The major, who did not want to be identified, insisted he is not bisexual.
"I was just having fun," he said.
Another Air Force member, after listing a first name, offers a description of himself -- height, weight, and hair and eye color -- gives the "early '70s" as his date of birth and notes he is based in Misawa, Japan. Until contacted by Air Force Times for an interview, the airman also noted that he was "married, bi not gay," and described the kind of men he liked.
In 1994, 145 members were discharged. In 1995, the number rose to 232. A year later it was up to 283, and in 1997 there were 312 members discharged under the policy.
In January, the most recent figures available, 49 gay members were discharged.

GAY & BI FRATs
UCLA is renewing its version of this gay & bi frat this year, too.
Members of a new fraternity at Western Michigan University chalked the walkways of campus earlier this week to announce the establishment of a Greek society predominantly geared to the needs and interests of gay and bisexual men.
David Babler, WMU freshman majoring in biomedical science, spearheaded the effort to organize a chapter of Delta Lambda Phi at WMU, of which he now serves as president. The national social fraternity was founded in 1988 and has 20 active chapters in universities throughout the United States.
Babler said his participation in WMU's freshman orientation last summer and meeting with members of many Greek societies on campus is what sparked his interest in "going Greek."
BI FRIENDLY PUBLICATION SEEKS WRITING
ROUGHRIDERS: We are especially seeking fiction of 1000 - 6000 words in length which features bisexual transgendered men or intersexed men. This kind of fiction is very hard to come by, which is why Roughriders was started. It also means that new authors looking to break into print will have their best chance at getting published by submitting a story about a gay transgendered or intersexed man. There is no payment other that our gratitude and our attitude, but the author retains all rights and is welcome to submit simultaneously to other markets. We also accept reprints.Complete guidelines are on our Home Page: http://www.netgsi.com/~listwrangler/roughriders.html.

BISEXUAL ROCK PIONEER TOM ROBINSON HEADLINES 5TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON BISEXUALITY, APRIL 3-5 IN CAMBRIDGE
British Gold Record Winner, famed for hit songs "Glad to be Gay" and "2-4-6-8 Motorway" broadens horizons.
Boston, Mass. -- March 2, 1998 -- The Bisexual Resource Center today announced that singer Tom Robinson will be headlining the 5th International Conference on Bisexuality on April 3-5 in Boston. Tom Robinson's appearance at the bisexuality conference is especially relevant because both the singer and the conference challenge stereotypes and seek an open dialogue about bisexuality. Robinson, one of rock's best-known gay artists, was outed as a bisexual in 1988 by the British tabloids: "Britain's #1 Gay in love with biker girl!" In a 1994 NY Times article Robinson said, "I still find men more sexually attractive than women. I call that gay. I live with a woman with whom I have a long-term sexual and emotional relationship. I call that love. The two are not incompatible."
Robinson's 1978 classic debut album "Power In The Darkness" went gold in UK. He's been producing albums and hit singles ever since. In 1996 Robinson was awarded the Michael Callen medal of achievement at GLAMA (Gay & Lesbian American Music Awards) and last year was the Gold winner at UK Sony Radio Awards in the themed music category as presenter of the "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" documentary. A new live album is scheduled for spring release, tentatively titled "Holidays In The Sun". Tom will be performing Friday,April 3 at 8:00 PM at Lowell Hall at Harvard University.
The conference will challenge, as Tom has, many of the stereotypes surrounding bisexuality. Sponsored by Boston's 14-year-old Bisexual Resource Center(BRC) in cooperation with the Harvard Lesbian Bisexual and Gay Graduate Students (LBGGS), the conference is to be held April 3-5 at Harvard University in Cambridge. The three-day event offers over 140 concurrent workshops, panels, presentations, papers, and performances organized into 21 themed tracks, all supporting the conference theme of "One World, Many Faces: Unity and Diversity in Bi Communities, Queer Communities and the World."
For more information, or to register, call the conference info line at (617)747-4451, email info@biconf.org, or visit the conference web site at: http://www.biconf.org.
For more information on Tom Robinson, see his website at http://www.tomrobinson.com.
The conference is not sponsored by Harvard University or the Harvard University Science Center.

MODEL/ACTRESS SHOWS BI BENT "Gia had both sides too. She's the closest to me of all the characters I've played," says John Voight's daughter, Angelina Jolie, 22. She played George Wallace's steel-magnolia second wife on TNT, for which she earned CableAce and Golden Globe nominations; a frontier wife in CBS's True Women; and an androgynous drifter in "Foxfire."
That 1996 film awakened in Jolie another link to Gia, who was gay. The actress fell in love with her "amazing" costar, tattooed model Jenny Shimizu. "I probably would have married Jenny if I hadn't married Jonny [Lee Miller of 'Trainspotting' fame]," Jolie recently told a lesbian magazine. "I'm not saying I'm gay," she clarifies over lunch. "I'm just saying I find women attractive sometimes."
Which no doubt lent heat to what she calls Gia's "beautiful love scenes," the erotic encounters with Elizabeth Mitchell, who plays Linda, a character based on a composite of Gia's lovers. Mitchell, who costars in the upcoming Fox series Significant Others, broke her no-nudity rule to appear in the film, convinced by a "terrific" script and Jolie. "Although," Mitchell says with a laugh, "when I first saw her, I said, 'No way am I going to be naked next to that!' Angelina is the most beautiful woman I've ever seen."
Jolie met Tommy Lee Miller on the set of 1995's "Hackers," her first film. She and the hot young British actor ("Afterglow") quickly became involved. "That was my choice; I hadn't had sex in quite a while," she says. Neither wanted to get serious, yet a year later, when Jolie was 20, they married. Miller wore leather. She wore rubber pants and a white shirt festooned with his name written in her blood. True to form, their union is less than conventional. While they often live apart, she avows they have a loving commitment and are best friends.
BI CAFE ON INTERNET
BUSINESS WIRE, January 29, 1998
Cyberspace Gives Birth to First Interactive Site for Bisexuals
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.
The BiCafe is the First Bisexual Meeting Place of its Kind
Amidst the growing surge in bisexual awareness, a new forum for the bisexual has arrived. Located at http://www.BiCafe.com, the BiCafe is now providing an alternative face to face meeting place for bisexuals on-line.
"Previously, bisexuals had very few options for meeting other bisexuals," says founder Michael Page. "At the BiCafe, they can now meet each other as friends first, in a safe, comfortable environment. What we've done is eliminate the frustrations of trying to meet other invisible bisexuals in the usual ways."
This frustration is what motivated Michael to create the BiCafe. "Without seeing a symbol for bisexuality, it is not possible to visually identify like minded individuals," Michael states. "If I go to a gay bar, people assume that I am gay. If I go to a straight bar, people assume I am straight. I feel I have no where to go."
Other features of the BiCafe include erotic works of art, and an ever changing editorial section open to member submissions. "Any bi-related editorials will be accepted," says Michael Page. "Our members can post in an uncensored fashion, anonymously if they wish. This is intended to be a very interactive site." Members can also chat it up in the BiChat room, or check out the continually changing adult erotic photo gallery. "We've included some very sexual photos in this site, because I felt it was important to visually support a sex positive atmosphere," Michael continues. "Erotic photos give people permission to explore all sexual possibilities. Some people assume all pornography is tasteless, but our photos show that it doesn't have to be. Tasteful erotic images help people to relax their sexual parameters without pressure or rejection."
Currently, people can sign on at no charge until at least March of 1998. Credit cards are taken for age verification. Each adult member is required to complete a personal data sheet that includes a personality profile and the highly acclaimed Klein Sexual Orientation Grid (KSOG). To ensure integrity, each member is strictly required to post two classy, clothed photos of themselves within seven days of sign up. Member information is only accessible to other screened members, and each member has the ability to correspond with other members without divulging their real E-mail address.
Sure to provide a well traveled highway into the next sexual revolution, The BiCafe promises to be a state-of-the-art communications tool for the bisexual. "Four months ago, I personally knew only one bisexual person, and as a result, felt very isolated and misunderstood," says Michael. "Today I am thrilled to know over 40 other openly identifying bisexuals, many of whom surfaced at The BiCafe."
